WHY DO COTTON BUDS FEEL SO GOOD?

Do you love the sensation of using cotton buds to clean your ears? You know it’s wrong, but it feels so right, right?

I want to start with my public safety warning…cotton buds should not be used in your ears. I tell almost everyone I see and have even written another blog about the dangers of doing it. I’m a realist though and people will still do it, and this post is an educational look at why.

When I speak to people who use cotton buds in their ears it’s usually not because they believe they are helping remove ear wax. Most people know they are making the situation worse (If you’re unsure why then take a read at my blog on why cotton buds make ear wax issues worse). The reason many do it is to either relieve an itchy spot, or because it feels good. So good in fact that it can send shivers down your spine; a sensation that one patient recently described to me as like having an orgasm in your ear. So why is this?

THE VAGUS NERVE

The reason is because of something called the Vagus nerve system, which passes by your ear canal and helps regulate hormone release in many functions in the body.  Stimulating the Vagus nerve can have a positive impact on mental health, reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety. There are other places to reach it though, so if you’re looking for a boost don’t think that it’s ok to try and tickle the inside of your ears.

Gentle pressure on the ear canal can stimulate the Vagus nerve, which is connected to several organs including the heart, lungs, and digestive system. The Vagus nerve plays a vital role in regulating these functions, as well as releasing hormones such as oxytocin, which is associated with feelings of relaxation and well-being. This stimulation can create a pleasant sensation and activate the calming effects of the nervous system.

There are even studies in the USA happening today that are testing Vagus nerve stimulation to simulate sexual arousal in people who have been in paralysing accidents and can no longer feel anything below the waist. This is because the Vagus nerve system bypasses the spinal cord entirely. I don’t believe these studies have formed any concrete results as yet, but their work continues. Despite my previous patient’s comments though, you can not have an orgasm by using a cotton bud! These are words i never thought i’d be typing…

WHEN TO CALL FOR HELP

Stimulating the Vagus nerve can have a positive impact on your overall health and well-being, just don’t try and do it from inside your ears! While using cotton buds to clean your ears might feel good, it’s not a safe or recommended method. Contact James David Hearing Care to schedule an appointment and experience safe and effective ear procedures.
