Did you know that certain food groups can help your hearing? While we often think about our diets in terms of how they affect our weight and energy levels, it can also have a positive impact on your ears. As an independent ear clinic in Hartlepool, James David Hearing Care reveals the 5 foods that could help your hearing and our favourite places in Hartlepool to get them.

5 KEY FOOD GROUPS TO HELP YOUR HEARING
Omega 3:

This one is super easy to find in Hartlepool as it is found in fish like cod, tuna and sardines. The ‘chippies’ in Hartlepool better than anywhere else in the world – Whitby? No thank you i’ll take Verrills any day!  Hartlepool is also home to the Nationally renowned Hodgson’s Fish, where you can get a variety of delicious, Omega-3 filled wonders. Omega-3s have been shown to improve blood flow to the ear, which can help protect against hearing loss, tinnitus, and even ear wax buildup.

Dark Chocolate:

Yes, you read that right! Dark chocolate contains zinc, a mineral that can help towards preventing age-related hearing loss. A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found people eating dark chocolate regularly had better hearing than those who didn’t. Just make sure to choose chocolate with at least 70% cocoa solids to reap the benefits. This one’s cheating as technically it’s not dark chocolate, but I just love the chocolate pancakes at The Copper Kettle.

Sweet Potatoes:

Not only are sweet potatoes delicious, but they’re also a great source of beta-carotene, a nutrient that the body converts into vitamin A. Vitamin A helps keep the lining of the ears healthy, which can reduce the risk of ear infections and other ear-related problems. With plenty of local choice I always find a great range and friendly service at the Fruit and Veg stand in the Indoor Market.

Blueberries:

These tiny berries are packed with antioxidants, which can help protect the delicate hair cells in the ear from damage caused by free radicals. Plus, they’re delicious and versatile – add them to your morning smoothie, sprinkle them on top of your cereal or cram them in by the handful like my kids do. Fruitfayre on Oxford Road also have a great range to choose from.

Magnesium:

Another important nutrient is magnesium, which can be found in leafy green vegetables, nuts, seeds, and whole grains. I’m maybe stretching here, but there’s plenty of nuts in a Satay Chicken from my favourite Chinese The Silver Star. Magnesium has been shown to help prevent noise-induced hearing loss and can even improve hearing in some cases.

ARE WE FOR REAL?

Ok granted, some of my personal eating choices may not be the best for your waistline if you ate them every day, but by incorporating these food groups into your diet, you can give your ears an extra boost of protection against hearing loss, tinnitus, and ear wax buildup. Of course, good nutrition is just one part of maintaining healthy hearing. If you’re experiencing any issues with your ears, be sure to contact James David Hearing Care for expert advice and care to help your hearing.
